Social stories can be a great tool for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They can be used to teach developmentally appropriate behaviors associated with various social situations. Typically, social stories are paired with visuals, which I have provided. My social stories will typically include four sentence types: descriptive, directive, perspective, and control. The key to social stories is making it personalized…so use these stories as a template and modify as needed. Use these social stories to:
Teach basic social skills (sharing, using greetings, routines, etc.)
Teach understanding and appropriate responses in social situations (fire drills, change in routine, picking your nose)
Social stories often address “theory of mind” in the attempt to give individuals some perspective on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of others. After reading these social stories, give your student a chance to practice the skill with peers or an adult. Role-play a situation related to their individual needs and follow up with the specific social story.
